Scientologists become Nazis to attack their enemies

Clearwater Sun
December 1979

So here come these Scientologists dressed up as Nazi storm troopers, goose-stepping along Myrtle Avenue toward the offices of the Clearwater Sun.

And with them comes Nancy Reitze, their stony-eyed Madonna of propaganda, bearing a sheaf of off-the-wall prose that talks about persecution and Nazis and Jews and pre-war Germany.

The entire procession, looking as if it had just escaped from a Munich beer hall, stops in front of the Sun and proceeds to seig-heil and orate and just have a marvelous time trying to embarrass the Sun and our editor and reporters and whomever might be standing around.

It happened at 2 p.m. Friday in broad daylight, and at last Clearwater and the world got a chance to see Scientology in its true colors.

Thanks, Scientologists. We needed that. We knew that sooner or later you’d take off those civilian clothes and wear your natural plumage. But we didn’t think you’d call in the TV cameras and other news media to witness your doing it.

Nothing we can write could describe Scientologists any better than they did themselves on Friday. In their attempt to point an accusing finger at the Sun, the cult further convicted itself.

The cult’s members are, shall we say, miffed at the Sun for telling the truth about Scientology. The wienerschnitzel follies they staged on Friday was their way of diverting attention from themselves.

Thousands of Suncoast residents switched on their TV last night and witnessed the Scientologists-Nazis. Newspaper readers awoke this morning to find the story on their front lawns.

We predict the reaction of most viewers and readers was the same as the bystander near the Sun on Friday who wanted to slug one of Ms. Reitze’s Wehmacht.

He said he’d fought those so-and-so’s in World War II, and he was ready to do it again.

If the Sun was supposed to be intimidated by all these antics, we aren’t. We feel the same way about the Scientologists, only more so.

Readers who wish to express their own feeling about Scientology may do so today at 11 a.m. at Clearwater city hall.

A rally and parade will be held. It will a chance for all of us to exercise our freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and our freedom from fear.

Persons who attend this event will be showing they are fed up with Scientologists, with out-of-town interlopers and their neo-Nazi charades, with vacant-eyed men and women who walk our downtown streets with their engrams dangling.

Friday, Clearwater got its clearest view of the Scientologists.

This morning, we hope Clearwater will show the Scientologists a clear, unmistakable view of us.

Nazi-uniformed protesters get Kohl shoulder

The Courier-Mail (Brisbane)
Wed 07 May 1997, p9

Scientologists with their kids (who they dragged out to increase the numbers - gotta keep them stats upGerman Chancellor Helmut Kohl ignored protesters wearing Nazi SS uniforms as he boarded a boat for a Sydney Harbour cruise yesterday afternoon.

A group of 30 Church of Scientology members, some wearing Nazi SS uniforms and carrying placards reading “Hands Off Our Religion” and “Is Germany Really A Free Country?”, heckled Dr Kohl before his cruise.

Protester Liz Reeve said the German Government was orchestrating a campaign against Scientologists, even taking their children from schools.

“That shouldn’t be happening to children in any country,” Ms Reeve said.

The German Scientologists have accused the German Government of discrimination by not recognising it as a legitimate religion with the attendant tax advantages.

Dr Kohl and his delegation, including 15 German business leaders, were rushed past the protesters to their cruise boat.

On board, New South Wales Premier Bob Carr paraded his Ministers including “his youngest one”, Sports Minister Gabrielle Harrison.

Scientologists with their kids (who they dragged out to increase the numbers - gotta keep them stats upEarlier, Mr Carr introduced Opposition Leader Peter Collins to Dr Kohl as “leader of the conservative bloc” of parliament, “like your Christian Social Democrats”.

Mr Carr was to have given a short speech welcoming the chancellor but this was put aside probably so Dr Kohl could enjoy a meal of Tasmanian salmon, washed down with Tyrells champagne, while taking in the views of a sunny Sydney Harbour.

Other guests included former prime minister Paul Keating - who is believed to have talked about German architecture with the chancellor - NSW Chief Justice Murray Gleeson and former premiers Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth.

Dr Kohl, who arrived in Sydney earlier yesterday for the final leg of his five-day tour, was also shown around the Opera House.

A police motorcade escorted the chancellor through Sydney streets.

SYDNEY, May 6 AAP - German Chancellor Helmut Kohl ignored protesters wearing Nazi SS uniforms as he boarded a boat for a Sydney Harbour cruise this afternoon.

A group of 30 noisy demonstrators, members of the Australian branch of the US-based Church of Scientology, some wearing Nazi SS uniforms and carrying placards reading ‘Hands Off Our Religion’ and ‘Is Germany Really A Free Country?’, heckled Dr Kohl before his cruise.

One protester, Liz Reeve, said the German government was orchestrating a campaign against Scientologists, even taking their children from schools.

“That shouldn’t be happening to children in any country,” Ms Reeve said.

The German Scientologists have accused the German government of discrimination, by not recognising it as a legitimate religion with the attendant tax advantages.

The chancellor and his delegation, including 15 German business leaders, were rushed past the protesters to the Captain Cook cruiser, the John Cadman II.

On board, NSW Premier Bob Carr showed off his ministers including “his youngest one”, Sports Minister Gabrielle Harrison.

Others introduced were Roads Minister Carl Scully, Community Services Minister Ron Dyer and Sydney Lord Mayor Frank Sartor.

Earlier, Mr Carr introduced Opposition Leader Peter Collins to Dr Kohl as as “leader of the conservative bloc” of parliament, “like your Christian Social Democrats”.

Mr Carr was to have given a short speech welcoming the chancellor but for reasons not told to accompanying media this was put aside, probably so Dr Kohl could enjoy a meal of Tasmanian salmon, washed down with Tyrells Champagne, while taking in the views of a sunny Sydney harbour.

Other guests on board included former prime minister Paul Keating - who is believed to have talked about German architechure with the chancellor - NSW Chief Justice Murray Gleeson and former NSW premiers Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth.

After the cruise, Dr Kohl was shown around the Sydney Opera House.

Despite a threat of rain earlier today, warm sunshine greeted Dr Kohl on his arrival in Sydney for the final leg of his five-day Australian tour.

A police motorcade escorted the chancellor through the streets of Sydney to the Inter-Continental Hotel, where he and his entourage are staying.

Later today, Dr Kohl and the man described as his likely successor, education and finance minister Dr Jurgen Ruttgers, will host a series of business meetings with the Australian-German Chamber of Commerce.

Dr Kohl will host a function for 1,000 people at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel tonight.

Statement from the German Embassy in Washington DC

Scientology and Germany
Understanding the German View of Scientology

The German government considers the Scientology organization a commercial enterprise with a history of taking advantage of vulnerable individuals and an extreme dislike of any criticism. The government is also concerned that the organization’s totalitarian structure and methods may pose a risk to Germany’s democratic society. Several kinds of evidence have influenced this view of Scientology, including the organization’s activities in the United States.

Germany confirms Cruise can’t film at key site

Mon Jul 2, 2007 12:11PM BST

By Louis Charbonneau

BERLIN (Reuters) - Makers of a movie about a failed plot to kill Adolf Hitler will not be allowed to use a German memorial site but this is unrelated to the fact that star Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, the Finance Ministry said on Monday.

Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung had made it clear the filmmakers could not shoot at any military sites as long as Cruise plays hero Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg because of his link to Scientology. Berlin regards it as a cult masquerading as a religion to make money, a view Scientology leaders reject.

[…]

The American actor has had problems with German authorities due to his membership in Scientology in the past. Stauffenberg’s eldest son said he did not want Cruise to portray his father.
