Ottawa Citizen: Blacklisting actor is overkill

Tom Cruise might be strange and even annoying, but as much as anyone else he has the right not be discriminated against on account of his religion.

The Germans aren’t so sure, however. Cruise, like several other actors, is a member of the Church of Scientology, a sect of which the German government is highly suspicious. The Germans apparently feel that it has totalitarian tendencies, and so they are preventing Cruise from filming a movie in or around the country’s military sites.

In the movie, Cruise is to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who led an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler during the Second World War. Stauffenberg is something of a hero in Germany, because he is proof that not all Germans supported the Nazi project. The Germans have suggested that Cruise, owing to his Scientologist affiliation, cannot be trusted to honour properly the story of Stauffenberg.
